Beautiful and Broken by Julia Maddalina, inspired by Patrick Rothfuss's novella The Slow Regard of Silent Things.

This oil painting was a passion project spurred on by the Worldbuilders Fundraiser Event at the end of 2018. I am in love with the character of Auri, from Patrick Rothfuss’ The Slow Regard of Silent Things, and I had been wanting to do a solo painting of her for some time. At the time I had challenged myself to paint something in the style of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, a painting hero of mine. As I watched Pat stream on Twitch for the Charity, I couldn’t think of a better time to begin this painting idea that meant so much to me.

As I read and sketched, I realized that rather than paint a specific moment, I wanted to try and capture Auri’s general wonder towards Fulcrum; the true shape of him, the secrets he held, and where he belonged. As a tribute to everyone out there who is “Beautiful and Broken”, this painting is for you. -Julia Maddalina, Artist

“Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power. Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts.”

Patrick Rothfuss was born in Madison, Wisconsin to awesome parents. After nine years at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, he accidentally had enough credits to graduate with an English degree. Patrick then went to grad school. He’d rather not talk about it. In March 2007, The Name of the Wind was published and met with surprising success. In the years since, it has been translated into 30 languages, won all manner of awards, and become a bestseller in several countries. After a great deal of work and a few raised eyebrows from his patient editor, Wise Man’s Fear came out in March 2011, immediately hitting #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list. When not working on the third book of the series, Pat plays with his kiddos, makes mead, and runs Worldbuilders, a geek-centered charity that has raised more than a million dollars for Heifer International. Julia Maddalina is a traditional portrait artist and fantasy illustrator. In addition to traveling the United States giving lectures, classes, drawing & material demonstrations she works in a mix of commissions, freelance work, creating gallery show pieces, and educational content.

Her work has been recognized internationally and is accomplished in many mediums. You can find her work in art magazines, books, and in fine art prints.

Julia's passion for the arts has been fueled by fine art portraiture & illustration from a very young age. By the age of 12, enthusiasm for learning prompted seeking out instruction from artists in the community & participating in gallery shows with community art organizations.

She has spent the last 14 years studying portraiture in oil paint from artists from around the country and have brought this knowledge to her illustrative work. She is a regular attendant of the Portrait Society of America Conference, as well as other portrait painting workshops, since the age of 15. Having attended on a full scholarship and graduated with a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2018 with a major in Illustration, her aim is to incorporate the narratives from her most cherished stories into her paintings. Another notable feat is her minor in Biomedical Illustration to improve the anatomy of the figures and portraits in her work.

Julia was featured in South African Artists Magazine as an International Artist in 2019, recognized in Southwest Artists Magazine as “21 Under 31 Artists to Watch” in 2014. She also received recognition from the Portrait Society of America in their Members Only Competition in 2019 and 2020, and in 2022 with a recognition in the “Select 50” category of the International Competition, among many other recognitions and awards.

Since the pandemic, she's found myself working with numerous charities such as Worldbuilders, Jasper’s Game Day, The Hispanic Federation, the Pablove Foundation, and Project HOPE, using her work to further support their causes whenever she is able to.

In addition to traveling the United States giving lectures, classes, and demonstrations on how to draw with General Pencil Company, Julia also  works on a mix of commissions, freelance work, gallery show pieces, and creating educational content.

"I aim to keep inspiring young artists and telling great narratives through the medium of portraiture." - Julia Maddalina
